This week: Jesus tells a story about what happens when you build a house on sand and a house on rock. Matthew 7:24-27
JANUARY 30th PRESCHOOL CURRICULUM
"The crowds were amazed at His teaching.” Matthew 7:28, NIV
Bottom Line: Jesus teaches me important things.
This week: Jesus tells a story about what happens when you build a house on sand and a house on rock. Matthew 7:24-27
Insight: TRANSFORMATION
Discipleship Kit:
- Parent Guide – Use this parent guide to help you walk through discipling your preschooler this week
- Story Video – Each week there will be a new Story Video to watch (from Orange Media)
- Memory Verse Song – Your preschooler will learn this month’s memory verse along with hand signals
Activities:
- Home Connection
- NEED: Activity Page, scissors, crayons or washable markers, glue sticks, and a permanent marker
- DO: Encourage children to fold their paper at the thick lines. Paper should be folded so the house design is on the outside of the fold. The words will be on the back of the house. Have children decorate the outside of their house then draw their family on the inside of the house.SAY: “In our Bible story today, Jesus taught us how to live. We heard about two men who built houses, one on the sand and the other on the rock. I have a house for you to make and decorate. Fold your paper at the solid lines. (Pause.) You should be able to see the roof and outside walls of your house. (Help re-fold as needed.) Decorate the outside of your house with the [crayons/markers]. (Pause.) Open your house and draw your family inside. (Pause.) You did a nice job of building your house and showing our family in it. Both houses in our story looked great but then it started to rain, harder and harder. The house built on the sand fell because the rain washed the sand away. But the house on the rock was still standing. The rain couldn’t wash away the rock. Jesus told us this story so He could teach us how to live and be strong like the house built on the rock. We can love everyone like God loves us and treat them like they are important to God. We can share and help, just like Jesus teaches us to do. I’m so glad we have a friend like Jesus to teach us important things. Who teaches me important things? [Bottom Line:] Jesus teaches me important things.”

Let's fill it with things that can help the hurt man. What things should a doctor have in their bag? (pause) Bandages. Do you see a picture of bandages? (pause) Add the bandages to your doctor's bag. (pause) What else should go in the doctor's bag? (continue naming all the items and having them glue the items to their bags.) You filled your doctor's bag with lots of things that can help people who are hurt. The man was lying on the road and asked someone to help him, but the first man walked right by him. Another man walked by and the hurt man asked him to help. He walked right by, too. A third person walked by, and the hurt man asked for help. This third man was a Samaritan. Samaritans and the hurt man's people were not friends, but the Samaritan stopped and helped the man. The Samaritan gave the hurt man bandages, put him on his donkey, and took him to a place to stay until he was better. The Samaritan was a great helper. We can be helpers, too. We can help everyone: parents, teachers, friends, everyone! The imprtant thing that Jesus taught us in this story is that we can help everyone. I'm so glad we have a friend like Jesus to teach us important things. Who teaches me important things? [Bottom Line] Jesus teaches me important things."

- DO: Encourage the children to fill the barn with yellow dots using their crayons or markers. Color the barn as desired.
- SAY: “Friends, come sit with me at the table. Let’s make a craft that will help us remember that it’s always better to share. Look on your paper. What do you see? (Pause.) That’s right; it’s a barn! This is like the barn in our Bible story today. We heard how the farmer had so much food that it filled his barn. Let’s fill your barn with grain. Use your marker or crayon to fill in your barn. (Pause.) Keep adding the grain until it’s all filled up. Jesus told the story we heard today to teach us something very important. The farmer in our story grew a lot of food for his family. He grew so much food that it filled his barn with a lot left over. So, he decided that he would build a bigger barn to keep all the food to himself. God gave the farmer way more food than he needed. The farmer could have shared and helped a lot of people, but he didn’t. Sometimes God gives us more than we need, too, so we can share with others. That’s the important thing Jesus taught us in this story. God wants us to share. I’m so glad we have Jesus to teach us important things. Who teaches me important things? - SAY: “In our Bible story today, Jesus told a story about a shepherd and his sheep. He was counting his sheep and noticed one was missing. Let’s make a picture of that lost sheep. On your paper are the legs and the face of the sheep. We’ll use the cotton balls to fill in the sheep’s body. Use the glue place the cotton balls where the wool would typically be. There’s your cute little sheep. Jesus said that the shepherd loved all of his sheep; each one mattered to him. So he went out to find the one missing sheep. Jesus told us this story to teach us something very important: we are important to God. He tells us that if we were lost, God would find us then celebrate. You are important to God. - SAY: “Today, we heard a story that Jesus told to teach us that God loves, us no matter what! It’s the story of a dad and his son. Take your sentence strip and fold it back and forth like this. (Demonstrate.) Great! Rub the glue stick on one end of the sentence strip and press the picture of the son to it. (Pause.) Now rub the glue stick on the other end of the sentence strip and press the picture of the dad to it. (Pause.) Pull the ends apart like this. (Spread out the sentence strip.) The son took all the money and went far away from home. He spent money on food, clothes, and his friends until there was no money left. He made a lot of bad choices. He didn’t have anywhere to sleep or any food to eat! So he decided to go home. Now fold the strip back together like this. (Demonstrate.) When the dad saw his son walking, he ran to him and hugged him. Then he threw a party to celebrate that his son had come home. The dad loved his son even though he had made bad choices and spent all the money. But God loves us even more than that! God loves us, no matter what! He won’t get mad when we mess up, He wants to forgive us and help us. Jesus tells us this story because He wants us to know that God loves us, no matter what. They followed a big, bright, beautiful star. Let’s make a star to help us remember our story from today. Remember it was big, bright, and beautiful! You can use any of the fun papers and glue them on or color with the fun sparkly crayons. (Pause.) Yours is beautiful! Let me help you tape the craft stick to the back of your star. (Pause.) Hold them up high and say, [Bottom Line] ‘God gave us Jesus.’” (Repeat.) We can celebrate Jesus all year, not just at Christmas. Every day is a great day to celebrate Jesus. Today, we heard how the wise men knew that God was sending someone very special, and they wanted to see Him. When a big, bright, beautiful star appeared in the sky, they knew that the needed to follow it. They followed it for a very long time until it stopped over a house. It was the house where Jesus lived. The wise men knew that He was the very special person they were looking for. He was the one God sent to show His love for everyone. I see a field on your page. Where were the shepherds on the night Jesus was born? (Pause.) They were out in the field, watching over their sheep. That’s right! And what happened? (Pause.) Yes! An angel appeared to tell them that Jesus was born. And then a whole sky full of angels appeared because this was VERY big news! What did the shepherds do when they heard that Jesus was born? (Pause.) That’s right, they ran to see Baby Jesus because they were so excited! You did a great job finding the S’s. ‘S’ is for Shepherd! Glue the picture of Baby Jesus to your ornament. (Pause.) Now color hay under Baby Jesus. This looks fantastic! You can hang it on our tree. We heard how Mary and Joseph had to go all the way to Bethlehem to be counted. It was a long trip and Mary was pregnant, so she rode on a donkey. Once they got there, they tried to find a place to stay but all the rooms in the inn were full! But the nice innkeeper let them stay in his stable with the animals. To give your angel its first wing, we need to trace one hand with this pencil. (Pause.) Now trace your other hand on the other side of the ‘A.’ (Pause.) Fantastic! What sweet angel A’s you made! ‘A’ is for . . . Angel! In our story today, we learned that God loved us way before we were even born! Isn’t that amazing? God loves us so much that He gave us Jesus. She made dinner for him every time he came to town. The woman and her husband wanted to help Elisha even more, so they built a room on the roof of their house. This is Elisha's room. (Hold up the blank room.) It doesn't have anything in it. So let's add some furniture! Do you see a picture of a bed? (Pause.) Find a spot in your room and glue it. (Pause.) He also had a desk. Do you see a picture of a table and chair? (Pause.) Find a spot in your room and glue it. (Pause.) There was one more thing: a lamp so he could see. Do you see a picture of a lamp? (Pause.) Glue the lamp somewhere in your room. (Pause.) You did a great job of putting the things in Elisha's room. Elisha was so happy and thankful when he saw his room.
