Now, let’s tape the sides. (Pause.) Put the short part of the straw in the opening like this. (Demonstrate.) Come over and let’s stand in a line, and we will launch our rockets. (Pause.) Let’s do a countdown. Five, four, three, two, one . . . blastoff! (Pause.) Wow, so cool! (Collect all the rockets and help reload them on the straws.) That was amazing! There were so many people at the temple for the celebration that Mary and Joseph had a hard time finding Jesus. Take your people picture and run your glue stick on this fold right here. (Demonstrate.) Great! Now, let’s cover Jesus with the crowd. (Pause.) Mary and Joseph looked over here, and over there, behind these people, around those people, until they finally found Jesus. Look on your paper and gently lift the crowd to look behind it. There’s Jesus. We found Him! Yay! When Mary and Joseph found Jesus, He was talking to a lot of grown-ups about God, and they were listening! They were amazed with what He taught and how much He knew about God. Activities:
- Home Connection
- NEED: Activity Pages, paper plate, Christmas stickers, glue and scissors
- DO:Encourage children to decorate their “cookies” and paper plate with crayons and/or Christmas stickers. Talk about each cookie as they add it to their plate. Show them how to glue their cookies onto the plate.
- SAY: “Who loves Christmas cookies? (Pause.) Me, too! Let’s make a plate of special Christmas cookies. Let’s start by decorating your plate with some fun Christmas stickers. (Pause.) Great job! Here’s a cookie. It has a picture of an angel on it. The very first part of the Christmas story is when the angel came to Mary and told her that she would have a baby named Jesus. He was special because Jesus is God’s Son. Add that cookie to your plate. Here’s another cookie. This one has a picture of a baby. It’s Baby Jesus! Mary and Joseph traveled to Bethlehem and had to stay in the stable with the animals. This was the night Jesus, God’s Son, was born. Add that cookie to your plate. (Pause.) This cookie has a candy cane on it. This was the story when the angel told the shepherds that Baby Jesus was born. Then the sky filled with angels who proclaimed, ‘Glory to God in the highest!’ The shepherds went to see Baby Jesus and knew how special He was. They wanted to tell everyone about Baby Jesus. Add this one to your plate. (Pause.) This last cookie has a star on it. In our story, God put a star in the sky, and the wise men saw it and knew they needed to follow it to find God’s Son. When they got there, they bowed down and worshipped him and gave him presents. Add this last cookie to your plate. (Pause.) Super job! Look at your plate of Christmas cookies. They tell the Christmas Story. Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son. We can remember how special Jesus is every day, not just on Christmas. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son.”
- Bath Time
- Use bath crayons to draw different colors of stars on the tub. Ask your child to point to the color of star you call. “Point to the blue star. Now, point to the red star...” After naming all the colors of stars, talk about how God made a special star for the wise men to follow so they could find Jesus. The wise men knew Jesus is special because Jesus is God’s Son.

Discipleship Kit:
- Interactive Nativity Set– Use these activity pages to walk through the birth of Christ with your preschooler this week
- Story Video – Each week there will be a new Story Video to watch (from Orange Media)

Activities:
- PARTY BAG
- NEED: Activity Pages, bag, markers, crayons and other crafting supplies that you may have on hand.
- DO: Give each child a gift bag to decorate with crayons, markers, and birthday stickers. Next, give each child one set of pictures. Briefly describe each story picture as you hand them out.
- SAY: “Tomorrow is the big day! It will be Christmas and Jesus’ birthday. I am so excited! I have something we can make so we don’t forget the best story ever about when God gave us Jesus.” First, I want you to decorate this party bag. I have birthday stickers, glitter pens, and markers—everything you need to make it extra special. Your bags look so fun! Now let’s put something in it to help us remember what Christmas is all about. First, we have this picture. (Give each child an “Angel Visits Mary” picture.) What is happening in this picture? (Pause.) Yes, the angel is telling Mary she will have a special baby, and His name will be Jesus. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son! Lay this picture down in front of you. Next we have this picture. (Give each child a “Jesus Is Born” picture.) Who is this in this picture? (Pause.) Yes, this is baby Jesus. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son! Lay this picture beside your angel and Mary picture. Now we have this picture. (Give each child an “Angels Visit the Shepherds” picture.) What is happening is this picture? (Pause.) The angels are telling the shepherds the good news that Jesus was born. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son! Lay this picture beside your baby Jesus picture. And finally, we have this picture. (Give each child a “Wise Men Follow a Star” picture.) What are these men following? (Pause.) They are following a special star. And who did the star help the wise men find? (Pause.) Yes! The star led them to Jesus. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son! Lay this picture beside your picture of the shepherds.
- BOW SORTING
- NEED: Table; large bag of small gift bows in a variety of basic colors like red, blue, and green; construction paper in the same colors; tape
- DO: Tape the construction paper pieces to the table. Make sure you have one matching color of paper for each gift bow. During the Activity: Lead the children in sorting the gift bows by placing the bows on the matching color of construction paper. Extended Activity: Count the bows on each piece of construction paper after you have sorted them by color.
- SAY: “Look at all the gift bows I have! This one is red. (Hold up a red bow.) This one is blue. (Hold up a blue bow.) And this one is green. (Hold up a green bow.) We are going to play a sorting game with these bows. To play this game, you put all the red bows on the red paper, all the blue bows on the blue paper, and all the green bows on the green paper. See? Now you try! Looking at all of these gift bows reminds me of the part in the Christmas story where the wise men took gifts to Jesus. They followed a special star all the way to Jesus and then gave Him the gifts and worshiped Him, because they knew Jesus was special. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son!”

- DO: Write “Jesus is God’s son.” Then encourage the children to color the other side of the candy cane red. Have the children make stripes of glue on the candy cane shape and cover them with cotton balls to make white stripes.
- SAY: “What does this shape look like? (Pause.) It could be a hook, or a ‘J’ (hold it up like the letter J), or a candy cane! In our Bible story today, we learned about some shepherds. Shepherds take care of sheep. They use a crook to guide the sheep where they want them to go. Well a crook looks a lot like a candy cane. Let’s make this look like a candy cane by adding some white stripes. Glue some lines on your candy cane then cover them with cotton balls. (Pause.) Wow! Super job. Now, flip it over, and let’s read so you can know where to find our story in the Bible. (Pause.) Perfect! The shepherds in our Bible story were visited by one angel who told them the wonderful news that Jesus, God’s Son, had been born. Then the sky was filled with angels praising God and saying ‘Glory to God in the highest!’ When the angels left, the shepherds quickly went to find Baby Jesus in the manger. Once they saw Him, they knew that everyone needed to know that Jesus was born. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son.”

The angel told Mary she would have a special baby named Jesus. [Child’s name], will you put Mary here in our stable? Thank you! Next, we have Joseph. (Hold up Joseph.) Mary and Joseph traveled all the way to a town called Bethlehem before Baby Jesus was born. [Child’s name], will you put Joseph here in our stable? Thank you! When Mary and Joseph got to Bethlehem, there were no rooms for them to sleep. Someone told them they could sleep in the stable where the animals slept. I need lots of helpers to put animals in our stable. Now I will give you an animal to put around our stable. Then, the most exciting thing happened! Baby Jesus was born! (Hold up Baby Jesus in a manger and glue/tape it in the center of the stable between Mary and Joseph.) And why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son! Christmas is all about celebrating Jesus’ birthday! (Point to Baby Jesus.) It’s all about when Jesus was born. Why is Jesus special? [Bottom Line] Jesus is God’s Son!”
- Drive Time
- As you drive or take a walk, look for animals. Can you find a dog, cat, bird, or even a squirrel? As you name the animals, talk about what it might have been like for Mary and Joseph to sleep where animals did. It wasn't that special of a place, but the most special baby ever was born there! Hello Parents!
Today we heard a story about Nehemiah and how he wanted to fix the wall in Jerusalem but he couldn’t do it by himself. God gave Nehemiah people who helped him fix the wall. God gives us people who help us too! We talked about the different people in our neighborhood that help us, and your child made a thank you note for them. Please take time this week to help your child deliver their thank you note.
Thank you! And remember,
God is good.
